People You Need to Know Magazine Spotlight: Mea Boykins

People You Need to Know Magazine proudly salutes Mea Boykins, an alumna of Spelman College. While attending Spelman, Mea was a psychology major, with a minor in French. She dropped French after spending a semester in Paris, attending Skidmore in Paris and L’Institut de Catholique, (Catholic University) where French became her second language.

Mea created the Student Emergency Assistance program (SEA) as a sophomore at Spelman by using her networks, family, jobs, and letter writing to raise the first $5,000 for the fund. SEA was inspired by her father, who is a very giving person. He helped a few of her friends, as well as other Spelmanites with their tuition to help them to matriculate or stay in school. SEA is targeted for juniors and seniors at Spelman College who have exhausted all of their financial resources and have an impending balance, placing them at risk for expulsion.

The requirements to receive SEA is a 3.0 grade average and being active in community service activities such as uplifting women and children. The candidates are selected by the scholarship committee in the financial aid department at Spelman College.

On April 17, 2011, Mea had her first event for SEA, which was a benefit concert that was catered, and to date, she has raised over $8,000. Two scholarships were awarded after she raised the first $5000. Sascha Betts, a junior and Ashley Cousins, a senior were both awarded $2500 during the fall of 2010.

Presently, Mea is engaging in a variety of community work, as well as working several different jobs. This fall, she will be attending London Metropolitan University for her Master’s in Child, Adolescent, and Family Mental Health. After her Master’s, she plans to pursue her Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and Intern in Africa. Her overall goal is to create several nonprofits for youth and women across the world to help uplift, motivate, inspire, and educate them.
