For those of us who would have had the opportunity to see the movie ‘Lean on Me’ a true story which starred Morgan Freeman as ‘Crazy Joe Clark’; Hazel Clark is the proud daughter of the real Joe Clark who is the subject to that very movie.

Her father Joe Clark was not only an icon to the world of teaching in all of the United States; but he was also a great father figure to his family and one of Hazel’s biggest supporters. He sacrificed a lot so that his family would have everything and all he wanted was to know that they were happy.

With the support of her father and the motivation of watching her brother JJ and her sister Joetta compete were major factors in Hazel going on to become a star athlete. “I grew up admiring my brother and sister. I would stand on the side lines and close my eyes and hold my arms out to give Joetta my energy when she ran. My sister in-law in amazing! Sometimes I would be in awe of her smooth style and speed. Family is definitely a major factor because I’ve been able to see them work hard to achieve success”.

Hazel’s siblings; her brother and coach JJ, and her elder sister Joetta were also outstanding talents in track and field. JJ Clark was an outstanding athlete and had a sensational career in high school. Upon leaving high school he received a full athletics scholarship to Villanova University where he became an All American in middle distances. After college he trained and made the Olympic trials in the mile and then started coaching shortly after.
