Dr. Gloria Campbell-D’Hue, founder of The Atlanta Dermatology and Medispa Center, decided she wanted to go to medical school at the tender age of three; however, she was inspired to go into the field of dermatology because of her youngest sister, who has eczema.

“After my mother’s death, I was in medical school and assumed the caretaker role, and was exposed to dermatologists who cared for my youngest sister’s skin,” Dr. D’Hue explains.

Dr. D’Hue has now been practicing dermatology for almost 29 years. She has received numerous awards, is known as a leader in her field, and finds her profession rewarding.

Since a number of skin diseases are associated with internal medical problems, dermatology can play an important role. In some cases, a dermatologist makes a diagnosis before a primary physician does. Though she performs surgical procedures, her patients are predominately healthy.

“They come in for cosmetic reasons and walk out happy, usually after one or two visits,” Dr D’Hue states. “They feel gratified because they see progress very quickly.”

Dr. D’Hue has made it her mission to educate patients. The following are her top three secrets to great skin:

1. Make sure you take care of the skin that is taking care of you – both internally and externally. That means drinking the proper amount of water, good nutrition, and if necessary, vitamin supplements.

2. Have a good cleansing regimen. Wash your face on a daily basis with a mild cleanser. Use a toner and moisturizer with SPF 15 to protect your skin from damaging sun rays.

3. On your birthday, examine your birthday suit. Remember, moles can change over time.

The Atlanta Dermatology and Medispa Center has licensed estheticians and offers a potpourri of services including chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser hair removal. For more information call Dr. Campbell-D’Hue’s office at 404-349-7440 or visit her website at www.atldermmedispa.com.

Honey and Skin Care Favorite Tips! ~ Ruth Tan

I would like to share with you some honey and skin care knowledge, before you spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on all those anti-wrinkle and moisturizing creams. Try some easy, homemade tonic and remedy with honey first. And remember, the main ingredient in all those costly skin care products in the store could be honey!

Really, there is no simpler way to bring a smooth glow to your skin than with honey beauty recipes. Honey’s ability to absorb and retain moisture makes it an ideal ingredient in a lot of cosmetics as it helps keep skin hydrated and fresh and prevents drying. It is known that ancient beauties regularly applied a mixture of honey and milk to the face to keep the skin young-looking, radiant, and smooth.

Honey’s natural antioxidant and anti-microbial properties help to protect the skin from the damage of the sun’s rays, supports the skin’s ability to rejuvenate and refresh depleted skin, leaving it feeling silky soft and supple. One of the most common skin benefits of honey is related to minor acne treatment. Honey absorbs impurities from the pores on the skin, making it an ideal cleansing agent. With the wide-range of honey and skin care recipes, it is no wonder that there exists a huge number of honey products in the market for hair care, baby care, skin care for sunscreen, hand lotions, facial scrubs and moisturizers. And for instance, the Manuka Honey Lip Balm is an effective and natural moisturizer. It contains sun protection properties to soothe and protect the lips from becoming dry and chapped in cold and dry weather.

6 Pampering Homemade Honey Recipes for Skin Care:

Here are some do-it-yourself, self-help, extremely easy to follow recipes to enjoy the benefits of honey in skin care. I recommend them also because all the ingredients that go along with them are so easily accessible.

1. Cucumber-Honey Toner:

Puree 1 cucumber in a blender and drain away the liquid. Add 2 teaspoons of honey and mix. Apply on the face and neck area with a cotton pad. Air dry it and rinse clean.

2. Honey-Apple Toner:

In a blender or food processor, combine 1 peeled, cored apple with a tablespoon of honey and pulse until smooth. Apply mixture to the face and allow it to stay for 15 minutes, then rinse.

3. Honey-Oats Face Scrub:

Combine 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of finely-ground almonds, 2 tablespoons of dry oatmeal, and some lemon juice or yogurt to a luxurious and exfoliating facial scrub. Massage mixture gently onto the face, then rinse with warm water.

4. Gentle Honey Cleanser:

Mix 1⁄4 cup of honey, 1 tablespoon of liquid soap and 1⁄2 cup of glycerin (found in drug stores). Apply gently to the face, using a face sponge. Rinse with warm water and pat face dry.

5. Hot Honey Bath:

Perhaps the easiest beauty recipe related to honey and skin care — Add 1/4 cup of honey to your hot bath water for silky and luscious skin.

6. Honey Hair Conditioning Treatment:

For lustrous, silky, healthy hair and scalp, simply combine 1/2 cup of honey and 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup of olive oil. Massage scalp with this conditioner, then put on a shower cap for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual.

What happened to you?

When you started out as an entrepreneur, you were enthusiastic. Everything was new. You were optimistic about the future and work seemed more like a hobby. You didn’t mind putting in all of those long extra hours because you loved the fact that you were finally living your dream.

After a while, reality set in and before you realized what was happening, your mood started to change. Things weren’t so fun anymore and your enthusiasm started evaporating like fresh rain on hot pavement. You began to question yourself regarding whether your dream job was still what you really wanted. Everything became more like a grind … something similar to the job you couldn’t wait to leave in order to start your own business.

If you saw a glimpse of yourself in the two short paragraphs above … someone who is now uninterested and emotionally spent, you may be burned out. Nevertheless, there’s hope. Check out the 6 ways you can recover. Get prepared to turn your snarl into a smile, your stress into strength, take your creativity off pause and start glowing again.

You Deserve a Break. Take it.

Yes, if you’re feeling burned out, you deserve a break. For those who are still feeling chipper on the job, don’t wait until you feel burned out before taking a break. Take them as frequently as you can.

There’s much we can learn from a cat. Karen Brademeyer once said, “Who among us hasn’t envied a cat’s ability to ignore the cares of daily life and to relax completely?” Whether you like cats or not, you have to respect the fact that they know how to relax. You’ll often find them sitting near a window, sunning themselves and taking it easy. They know how to get plenty of rest. Notice that I didn’t use the word vacation here; I used the word break instead because your brain probably would have responded with, “I can’t afford a vacation.” However, if you CAN afford a vacation, take a long one. Otherwise, take more breaks where you can relax, and do it completely.

Set Your Priorities in Order

Stand on the sidelines of life for a moment. Have you forgotten what’s most important in this life? Tomorrow offers no guarantees. Working and making money is good, but our friends and family are priceless. Redefine what success means to you. What are you working toward? Is your health already suffering from the overload?

Get That Bee Out of Your Bonnet

What’s really stressing you out? Why are you having all of those sleepless nights, which cause you to be on edge most of the time? If you take a bit of space out of your busy day, most likely, you can identify what’s bugging you. After you find it, take action … isn’t that the first thing you would do if a bee actually found its way into your bonnet?

Slow Your Roll

Slow down. What you’re doing is not worth having a stroke or heart attack as a result of being overworked. Yes … burnout can lead to heart attacks and unfortunately, a stroke. Once again, slow down. The world will not stop turning if you decide to take some “ME” time during your busy day.

Add Some Spice to What You Do

Never underestimate the power of a good idea. Gather some friends around … if you still have a few, or start a mastermind group to help you add some depth to what you do. Sometimes it takes someone on the outside who can look in and help you add a bit of flavor to what you do. Adding different services to break the monotony or finding a way to do something more efficiently could be all that you need to add some zest to your work.

Talk to Someone

It’s OK to get help. As brilliant and as strong as we are, we still need someone to help us when we feel helpless. Even though women have been labeled as the ones who hold up the sky, it’s not our job. It’s not your job to hold up the sky. It’s not my job either. If necessary, talk to a professional who can help you sort out the things which have your underwear in a bundle and your mood in a mess. If you don’t get a handle on your situation, your attitude definitely won’t be a magnetic one and you’ll miss out on the many opportunities that a good attitude can provide.

Charles R. Swindoll wrote, “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company … a church … a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past … we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you … we are in charge of our Attitudes.”

I believe if you take action on some of the suggestions above, you’ll start to feel much better, your attitude will begin to improve and burnout will just be a faded memory.

Cheers!

~Jacqueline

When should dental care begin?

Most pediatric dentists will agree that regular dental care should begin by one year of age, with a dental check-up at least twice each consecutive year for most children. Some children may need more frequent evaluations and care. In accordance with this recommendation, the following dental checklist for infants and toddlers has been provided by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Birth to 6 months of age:

Clean the infant’s mouth with gauze after feedings and at bedtime. Consult your child’s pediatrician regarding fluoride supplements. Regulate feeding habits (bottle feeding and breastfeeding).

Six to 12 months of age:

During this time, the first tooth should appear. Consult the pediatric dentist for an examination. Brush teeth after each feeding and at bedtime with a small, soft-bristled brush. As the child begins to walk, stay alert for potential dental and/or facial injuries. Wean the child from breast or bottle by his/her first birthday.

Twelve to 24 months of age:

Follow the schedule of dental examinations and cleanings, as recommended by your child’s pediatric dentist. Generally, dental examinations and cleanings are recommended every 6 months for children and adults.

As your child learns to rinse his/her mouth, and as most deciduous (baby) teeth have erupted by this age, brushing with a pea-sized portion of fluoridated toothpaste becomes appropriate.

Facts about deciduous teeth:

Proper care of a child’s deciduous teeth (also known as “baby” or primary teeth) is very important as these teeth hold space for the future eruption of permanent teeth.

If a baby tooth decays or is removed too early, the space necessary for the permanent teeth is lost and can only be regained through orthodontic treatment.

Infected baby teeth can cause the permanent teeth to develop improperly resulting in stains, pits, and weaker teeth.

Most children begin losing their baby teeth around the age of 4 – usually the front bottom teeth first. They continue to lose baby teeth until the age of 12 or 13 when all of the permanent teeth finally come through.

Thumb-Sucking and Dental Health

Generally, thumb-sucking before the age of two is normal and harmless. When thumb-sucking is not stopped by the appropriate age (generally by the age of five) then parents should discourage the act.
I’d like to give special recognition to those who are serving, have served, fought and given their lives for freedom. The sacrifices you make and have made are appreciated. I would also like to honor the wives and widows who are left at home — we know that you also make sacrifices on a daily basis.

Though this is considered a holiday, it is also a time to keep safety in mind. Each holiday is a vulnerable time for everyone. As you go shopping and traveling to spend time with family and friends, remember to practice safety. Neglecting to wear seat belts, drinking and driving, driving over the speed limit, and interpersonal violence because of too much alcohol are all simple things which occur that can ultimately change lives forever. I know firsthand about the emotional and financial burden it can place on everyone. I guess that’s why I’m committed to reminding people to do all they can to stay safe.

I always like to stress safety by sharing an interview granted to us by Dr. Mark Walker, Director of Surgical Health Collective, in metro Atlanta. Unfortunately, Dr. Walker has seen numerous major injuries during his career, which simply could have been avoided. So today and every day, please practice safety for those you love, your fellow human beings, and above all else, practice it for yourself.

(This interview was a few years ago and the numbers are troubling.)

The Healthtopia Radio Show with Bonnie Mechelle (www.myhealthtopia.com) now offers a new online motivational weight loss podcast to provide exceptional encouragement for women dealing with weight gain, divorce, single motherhood, unemployment, problems in the marriage, eating disorders and depression. Their mission is to “help women to lose weight and feel better about themselves”. They announced their upcoming Online and live Radio Launch and their plans to aggressively expand syndicated networks such as iTunes, Blogtalk Radio, Talkshoe and The Women’s Information Network (WIN) to name a few. The Healthtopia Radio Show will extend its program offering to 30+ websites showcasing free, bite-sized solutions focused on relevant topics for women who need to lose weight—one of the largest demographic groups in our country today.

“It feels great to know that thousands of women worldwide are already enjoying the many educational and entertaining audio shows we offer at www.myhealthtopia.com.” said Bonnie Mechelle, Executive Producer at WAEC Love 860 AM.

The Healthtopia Radio Show is the first entity of its kind to provide a stage for high-quality content featuring Christian experts on a huge variety of life-changing issues such as health and wellness, diet and exercise, parenting and career.

In addition to podcast and inspirational articles, The Healthtopia Radio Show offers ways for women to share their ideas, opinions, and expertise with other women. The Healthtopia Radio Show blogs are already busy with activity as women around the globe are chatting and sharing their ideas with one another.

Subscription to The Healthtopia Radio Show eMagazine is free; women sign in on the website www.myhealthtopia.com. One of their members, Maria Taylor from Las Vegas, Nevada said, “My laptop has become my new best friend. I take it into the laundry room with me, listen to a Healthtopia show, and before I know it the laundry is folded, and my cup is filled, all at the same time! Because the Healthtopia podcasts are short and easy to listen to, I can easily rejuvenate and be inspired while I clean my kitchen, mop my floor, or nurse my baby.”

Far more than just a motivational program, The Healthtopia Radio Show allows women to connect and create relationships with like-minded women in ways no other entity has embraced. For more information, visit http://www.myhealthtopia.com.

Working to the point of exhaustion should not be the time to admit that we need a break from our phones, computers and the office altogether. By that time, the body is literally saying, if you don’t shut it down, I’ll do it for you.

As businesswomen, it’s easy to fall into the trap of being defined by the work we do. In reality, the world will keep moving forward long after we’re gone and our work is finished.

Last week, we called one of our fellow business associates. She answered her phone from her hospital bed. Sadly, she revealed to us that she had been in the hospital for a week and a half because she had suffered a stroke.

Set aside some time each day to unwind, to relax and renew your mind. Work is important but your body is more important. Without good health, there will be little time for work. Take care of YOU today. Don’t wait until your summer vacation … now is the time.

~Jacqueline
