People You Need to Know Spotlight: Alicia Edwards ~ Atlanta Stylist & Fashion Writer
Alicia Edwards grew up sewing clothes for her dolls and became the “image consultant” for her friends and family. Her favorite nickname given by her family was Elsa Klensch, in honor of the host of CNN’s Style with Elsa Klensch, which ran from 1980-2000.
While attending Florida A&M University’s rigorous business program (SBI), fashion was never far from her mind. Alicia helped persuade the then Dean Mobley to allow women in the business program to add pant suits to their mandatory business attire. She also modeled with Images Modeling Troupe, teaching new models how to walk and choreographing scenes for their elaborate fashion shows.
Receiving both a Masters and BS in Business Management in 1998, Alicia moved to New York, where she attended Parsons School of Design and received an Associates in Fashion Studies. She then designed for Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica Jeans Company. At Nautica, she received the Designer of the Year Award for 2005 in June 2006.
Alicia left corporate fashion design in 2008 and started her first blog, Fashiona ~ Musings of a Stylish Girl, merging her love of writing and fashion together. Within months, her blog was picked up by Chicago Sun-Times and Reuters. “Fashiona” is her alter ego and allows Alicia to write about fashion, style and social commentary in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Alicia also started writing for Examiner.com as the NY Shoes and Accessories writer.
Last year, 2009 was a banner year for Alicia. She started her second and current blog Fashiona’s Musings, moved to Atlanta and did a 6-month stint as a Stylist for Ann Taylor Loft. She continues her work for the Examiner as the Urban Style Examiner and has become the Senior Features Editor for Kouture Magazine.
Alicia, like any other bona fide fashionista, enjoys Vogue, InStyle and Essence and follows all the major Fashion Weeks in New York, Paris, Milan and London, but what she loves above all else, is helping men and women find their best personal style. She often offers fashion and beauty tips as well as missteps to avoid on both her blog and Examiner.com column.
When Alicia is not working as a Stylist for White House Black Market at Cumberland Mall, or meeting writing deadlines, she can been seen around Atlanta at fashion shows, movie premieres, store openings, album launches and everywhere good fashion happens to be.
